Basically a traceroute is a map that shows what stops or locations that data must pass through in order to go from one computer to another. This is a very effective troubleshooting tool when diagnosing connectivity issues from one server to another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help! How do I run a trace route? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have no fear! We&#8217;ve got you covered on how to run a traceroute for both Windows and MacOS <br><br><strong>To Run a Traceroute in Windows<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The command application (cmd.exe) is used to run a traceroute on Windows. <br><br>Launching it is slightly different depending on your version of Windows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In\u00a0<strong>Windows 7<\/strong>:<ul><li>click on the\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0menu<\/li><li>type \u201ccmd\u201d and press\u00a0<strong>Enter<\/strong>\u00a0to get a command prompt.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>In\u00a0<strong>Windows 8<\/strong>:<ul><li>move your mouse to the bottom-left corner of the screen to bring up the\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0icon.<\/li><li>Right-click on\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0and select\u00a0<strong>Run<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Then type \u201ccommand\u201d and press\u00a0<strong>Enter<\/strong>\u00a0to launch the application.<\/li><li>Alternatively, you can type \u201ccommand\u201d into the\u00a0<strong>Search<\/strong>\u00a0field in the\u00a0<strong>Charms menu<\/strong>\u00a0after moving your mouse to the lower right corner of your desktop.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>In\u00a0<strong>Windows 10<\/strong>, type \u201ccommand\u201d into the search menu and press\u00a0<strong>Enter<\/strong>\u00a0for a command prompt.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To run the traceroute, type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>tracert desireddomainname.com<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>into the command prompt, where \u201cdesireddomainname.com\u201d is the name of the server to which you are having difficulty connecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The traceroute may take only a few seconds or a few minutes. Typically, the closer you are to the server, geographically, the more quickly the traceroute will complete.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To Run a Traceroute in Mac OS X<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a Mac, you can use the built-in network tools to run a traceroute which can be rather helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launch&nbsp;<strong>Spotlight<\/strong>&nbsp;(with \u2318 + SPACE or by clicking on the magnifying glass in your menu) to search for and launch&nbsp;<strong>Network Utility<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select the&nbsp;<strong>Traceroute<\/strong>&nbsp;tab and enter the&nbsp;<strong>hostname<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>domain name<\/strong>.<\/li><li>You also can perform a traceroute from the&nbsp;<strong>Terminal<\/strong>&nbsp;app. Simply enter:<code>traceroute domainname.com<\/code><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> If you believe you are experiencing network issues, having the output of trace-route handy and providing it, along with your public IPV4 address\u00a0 is very helpful if you need to contact ServerHub customer support. <br><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Traceroute is an application that traces the path data takes from one computer to another.
